Tips

Tip 1: Don't use flash for opening splash screens. Annoying your potential clients by wasting their time for loading and watching is not a recommended first step. Some may just click away to another site. In addition, since search engines can't read text in graphic formats, your search engine position will suffer. Use flash to illustrate something that is hard to show with photos such as how something works.

Tip 2: The Internet moves fast:

  • Search engine algorithms change constantly
  • Google AdWords, Yahoo and MSN PPC rules are constantly in flux--and bids are increasing
  • SMO (Social Media Optimization or Web 2.0) sites pop up like wildflowers
  • Sales and Lead optimization techniques are constantly improving.

Make sure all the techniques you use are up-to-date. Otherwise you will find yourself falling behind and missing leads and sales.

Tip 3: Be careful if you decide to use techniques which are against search engines terms of service. Spamming or cloaking can get you booted out of the search engines' data bases.

Tip 4: When using Web 2.0 techniques do not go against accepted etiquette. Annoying the community can lead to a PR disaster.

Tip 5: Do not panic if your statistics show conversions are down. First analyze to find the problem. Many times problems can easily be explained:

If your SERPs drop it could be because:

  • The search engine had a technical problem
  • Your site was temporarily down
  • The algorithm has been changed and your drop will be permanent. In this last case you can then go ahead and panic and then figure out what you need to do to rectify the situation
